For the first time since the 1970s, Cypriot ghost town could reopen

Online Desk: Northern Cyprus claims it will shortly reopen the derelicted Varosha city, a once popular tourist  destination that has remained a ghost town following the island’s Turkish military occupation decades ago. In 1974, when a coup supported by the Greek government met with a Turkish military attack, splitting  the nation between the Turkish-Cypriot north and Greek-Cypriot south, the Mediterranean island of Cyprus was divided in two. For years, Varosha’s once famous resort — an abandoned area of the ancient city of  Famagusta — has been serving as a no-man ‘s land between the north and south.  Entry into the area, which once attracted guests from  all over the world, remains prohibited to the public. Now, however, Ersin Tatar, prime minister of the self-declared Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), has  confirmed plans to reopen the area, once home to more than 12,000 hotel rooms and 25,000 inhabitants.
